Family Solutions Program Bolsters School Attendance and Achievement
Families sometimes face many challenges in managing life’s
circumstances. One of these challenges is helping children do the
very best they can to achieve school success.
Recently, 6 families with elementary school children in Madison
County participated in the Family Solutions Program over 10 weeks.
The families focused on how to overcome obstacles that prevented
regular attendance at school, creating a home environment each night
for homework, and learning strategies to work successfully with
teachers. A school administrator spoke to the families about building
partnerships with the school. Families focused on learning parenting
skills, creating a daily schedule that reflects the importance of
school, and structuring their day to make sure children attended
school in a punctual and regular manner. They learned the statistics
on how education prepares children to earn a good income. They learned
about how George Dawson had seven children who all graduated from
college despite the fact that George himself could not read.
At the tenth and final session, families had a celebration dinner
in recognition of their achievement and received a certificate of
completion and congratulations from the judge and program leaders.
