Family Solutions & Education
Family Solutions has over 15 lessons that can be used in a group.
All of them can be applied to the school environment and can be
used to help reduce problems with truancy, aid in bettering communication
and relationships with parents, reduce problem behaviors among youth,
and help youth to realize the importance of their education. Below
are a few examples of how the goal of each session aids in the families’
relationship with the school.
Cooperate
Helps to encourage good communication and cooperation among members;
helps families to appreciate the benefit of working on tasks together
and asking others for advice.
Communicate
Helps parents and youth communicate their feelings, needs and expectations
to one another and to persons outside of the home, helps parents
to understand the importance of their life on their child’s;
helps parents and youth to reflect on their own part of their relationship.
Educate
Helps youth and families emphasize education in their daily lives
and identify and attain educational resources; helps youth realize
the importance of their current actions on their future.
Learn from Others
Helps parents and youth become inspired about their potential from
the story of George Dawson, a man who learned to read at age 98
and wrote a book at 100; helps parents to become more engaged in
providing support for their children’s educational success;
helps parents and youth develop a plan for improving academic performance
and behavior.
Resolve Conflicts and Control Anger
Helps youth and parents understand alternative ways to resolve conflict
with peers, school officials and parents; helps parents become more
vigilant in supervising conflictual situations with their children;
helps youth and parents identify anger triggers and physical cues
and learn new ways to reduce angry feelings.
Make Decisions Wisely and Understand
Consequences
Seeks to help youth and parents realize the consequences of their
actions; helps youth understand that actions affect themselves,
their families, and their communities, helps youth realize that
common freedoms can be taken away if they continue down their current
path.
